Summer Learning Program:
For families living in CEC Property, the Summer Learning Program is designed to bridge the gap between school and summer, focused on decreasing the learning loss when children are not in school. Children in grades K – 8th grade can participate in crafts, games and guided and experiential curriculum for 10 weeks in the summer.
In 2020, 20 elementary school students participated in a variety of programs including Art, Science, Sports, Music and Reading over the 70 day session. In partnership with AmeriCorps volunteers, North Richland Hills Library, Summer Santa, churches, and individuals, students engaged in onsite sports camps, crafts, fun “Camp in a Box”, Summer reading programs and family style meals. We accomplished all of this with the help of 30 volunteers contributing over 500 hours.
All the students who attended were assessed as on or below grade level when they started, caused primarily by the learning loss as a result of COVID. However, at the end of the summer, the assessment revealed that all students had improved their reading level…some as much as two grade levels!
